Recognizing S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) & How it impacts older adults

Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as S.A.D., is type of depression that typically occurs in the winter months. Unlike, regular depression, a person who suffers from S.A.D. experiences symptoms at certain times of the year, most often in late fall and winter.

Older adults can be more susceptible to S.A.D. because of certain biological and social factors, including lack of sunlight, Vitamin D, and socialization. A great way to help the older adults in your life is to recognize and understand the signs and symptoms of S.A.D.

A few typical warning signs include:

• Feeling depressed most of the day, nearly every day

• Having low energy

• Having problems with sleeping

• Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed

If you or someone you know is maybe experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder, Plumas District Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions wants you to know you are not alone.
